10 Back to School Hacks That Will Save You and Your Friends From Struggling

Monday, August 1, 2016

If I didn't do these hacks, I would never get my stuff together. Now I am ready to help those who are struggling and need some shortcuts. Here's some hacks that are pretty useful for school.

1. Being in school, I had to experience some of the most pungent smells I've had in my life. This is great for school supplies and especially your locker. I usually save perfume samples from magazines and stores and use them as air fresheners. I know some of the perfume smells can be too strong, but I think it is better than just rudely spraying in people's faces. You can also use it in your book bags and purses, too!
2. This is one of my favorite ways to study for a quiz/test/exam. There are times when you have absolutely no clue about a lecture and something important is coming up. This may be tedious, but thank me later; rewrite your notes. I would rewrite my notes in a notebook so I could be able to literally comprehend what the notes. If you are a visual learner, draw pictures or put on stickers/sticky notes. If you like colors, use highlighters and colored pens. Also, rewrite your notes in the prettiest penmanship possible so you can read the notes better and actually get attracted to it. Here are some inspirations in Pinterest.
3. Here's a real life situation: you pulled a all nighter, or you really needed some (more) sleep. You woke up pretty late, and you are in a rush to school. Plan a quick day routine. That means abridging your normal routine to fit that time span to get ready, but look good at the same time. My shortened makeup tutorial is to skip either foundation or eyeliner, apply mascara (or falsies), and lip color. Make sure you moisturize before your makeup, though. Also, plan quick day outfits. A dress for me is the quickest way to do it because it feels pretty, makes the outfit easy to accessorize, and you don't have to worry about putting on anything else (maybe except spandex shorts for modesty). Another outfit I would throw on would be a cute oversized knit top and leggings (as long as I try to follow the dress code) for the same reasons.
4. Have a bad hair day too? I would apply oil (I like coconut or black castor oil), and throw it into a ponytail or bun. Maybe involve braids or twists, too.
5. Who else hates embarrassments? I had some incidents that really display my growth in being prepared for school. If I didn't think about an emergency kit, there would be even more embarrassments and more L's handed out to me. This emergency kit I'm talking about will contain hygienic stuff that will help me survive the year. I would include: feminine stuff, mints, body spray, lotion/Vaseline, mirror, floss picks, deodorant, and more to be continued in another blog.
6. If you referred to number 3, and want to be even more prepared, do a weekly prep. This really goes for people who pack their lunch to school, just like I do. Prepare your food for next week by making lunches earlier so you can save extra time. Also, you can do the same for the outfits so you won't be like Cher in the middle of Clueless with her clothes all over the floor.
Then here are 4 extra tips that you can do on your phone!
1. I feel like YouTubers say this on every single back to school hack video I watch. The did this for a very good reason: to prevent you from being lost all over the school. Take a picture/screenshot of your schedule, and save it as your background (preferably the lock screen). When you need to know where to go, you can turn your phone on, and your schedule is literally right there.
2. Okay, I HATE WAKING UP EARLY FOR SCHOOL!!!! In fact, I am an evening person because I am a lot slower in the mornings. What I would do is that I set up at least two alarms, one at the time I wake up and the other one hour back from the time I wake up. That way my when the first alarm goes off, my brain signals me to go back to bed at the time one hour from the time I need to wake up. And also, I can actually get myself up better at the second alarm.
3. My junior year was the first year I actually start taking college credit courses. What my fellow classmates did was that they created a group on Groupme, and everyone started helping each other out when it comes to pesky assignments. If you often struggle in a class, create a group chat on Groupme, or even on your phone's messaging system, so you can get ideas on how to succeed in a class. Also, find a way to contact your teacher, or the smartest person in that class, and I guarantee you that you will be able to get the best advice needed, too.
4. In school, there are important tasks to do, and sometimes we forget to do things. Well, I do. If you are tech savvy, or get on your phone too often, then you can set an alarm on your phone, title the task you need to finish, and put the alarm ringtone on silent, and here ya go. It will remind you over and over again until you finish that task.

Here are my hacks that really helped me during school. If you have any more tips different from what you see here, feel free to put it in the comments because I like trying new hacks. Until then, Desi out!

Back to School Accessory Essentials

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

It's almost August, and back to school shopping is kicking in. While we're trying to get a great education, we also want to look great everyday of the year- whether it is our cute day, dress-up day, t-shirt day, or even bum day. Concerning different dress codes and perceptions of how we do things we have different style staples that are essential are us to survive the school year - socially, educationally, and practically. For this post I am going to tell you what you will see me sporting this year when it comes to accessories (this includes shoes).

  1. Booties: Last fall, I fell in love with booties. I started looking for a brownish color to start with because when it comes to shoes, I prefer a brown color over a black color. I think blown look better in my opinion. I found the pair I loved at Marshalls, but unfortunately there were other trends to try so I held off buying another pair of booties until regionals for orchestra. At that time I got another pair at Charlotte Russe; unfortunately they probably might have sold out. But this fall/winter season, I plan to snag more pairs of booties like these (the leopard ones are soooo cute) so my outfits could be upgraded.
  2. Chokers: Never had a choker, but what I saw on IG made me want to buy these. I had a few necklaces I wore when I was younger that kind of acted like chokers now. They have some all over Forever 21, and when I approach there I will not leave without buying a choker. I really like the ones that tie like a bow.
  3. Long Necklaces: Okay, my long necklace collection is growing massively in my closet. I had my tassel necklaces, pendant necklaces, and even a tooth necklace that I've loved so dearly. I'm hunting down that clearance rack at Versona and snag almost every long necklace that looks cute because they add a spunky touch to an outfit!
  4. Small Satchels: I've always have chosen totes for my school purses, and it doesn't really produce good results. I've 'lost' things that are actually in my purse, and I ruined some things, especially my school supplies in the purse. Plus, some of my bags don't include a crossbody strap so I'm used to carrying a lot of things in my shoulder, and I probably have realized why things are lost. When I have a crossbody bag, I really got my stuff together. However, I am so picky about my purses. That's probably why I do look kinda put-together. I am  in love with the trapeze-shaped and dome-shaped bags, and here's what I choose.
  5. Lace Up Shoes: These shoes were the craze of every stylish person ever. Better yet, lace up everything trend was a favorite for this year because it adds that sultry and flirty touch. Talking about shoes, I have a few pairs of lace up shoes, one of them being the one on the bottom left of the number 5 on the picture. This instantly upgrades your outfit from a 0 to a 100 real quick.
  6. Statement Earrings: These are great when you don't need a necklace to complete a look, or if you are looking for something to compliment your scarf. I love these because they just stand out on their own. I like the ones with the color because they're just, really gorgeous.
  7. Bracelets/Cuffs/Bangles: I have been in love with arm candy, for example a useful link here. I have plenty of my bracelets, many of them still sticking around since I was little. With the arm candy trend still living, I am trying to gather up more stackable bracelets to perfect the trend a bit. *Return of the stack, return of the stack, return of the stack, you know that I'll be back...
  8.  Scarves: When I got introduced to fashion in fifth grade, those were my stuff. I would always wear them almost everyday, channeling my inner Wizards of Waverly Place Selena Gomez. If I'm not wearing a necklace (most likely to be a rare occasion), I'm more likely to wear a scarf. Scarves are getting skinner, if you are paying attention to the fall trends. But I don't think that will flatter my body, and bigger and chunkier scarves won my heart anyways. When the weather gets cooler, I'll pop one on.
Fall Essentials

Okay, these are all of my essentials for this school year. I'll be sure to be in more detail later on, but make sure you are looking forward to the clothing or supplies essentials next. Desi out!

A Change Has Come

Sunday, July 24, 2016

Wow, I haven't posted on here since sophomore year. I'm glad to be back to the blogging way of things. I have been on YouTube sometimes until the beginning of junior year which I stopped YT for a while because:

1. Junior year is the busiest year ever in high school. (Comment along if you are a junior because I hope to do junior advice soon)
2. My kodak camera broke and it may or may not be fixed.
3. I also broke my laptop (as in internet access), which really makes me bad with electronics. I really need to improve on that if I want to become a responsible adult starting on October 30th (because I turn 18).

On Snapchat, one of my fellow classmates was wondering if I still do a YouTube, so I tried to do a video. One, the internet access made it unable to edit my video transfer through internet, and two, I don't really have a flash drive to use. If I did have a flash drive, it would be an excruciating process. Then three, the house computer is very slow, mindful that we have a Windows Vista, and it would take a while to edit and post a single video on YouTube.

I also was reminded that there was still a blog that I still have like 1-2 years to do an update post like this. And there was an app to post things to this blog. And I can still take iPhone 6 quality pictures on here. Therefore, I wanted to touch up on my blog.

From these two years, my style changed from that "preppy" look to this style (I feel like I need to roast my freshman year self) that really defined me with elements of boho chic, glam, and sometimes girly. This inspiration came from these "preppy" YouTubers I was obsessed with during my freshman year, and my favorites are now finding themselves in a daring, but suitable style that really defines who they are. And I respect that. Now with the social pressure in school and basically everywhere else, I started to find myself. I am still stripping off the "wannabe" parts of me, and replace them with things that I wanted to take risks in and also the things I am starting to love. This is why I have changed from "PINK and Glitter Shoes," to "The Panamanian Belle," to now "Des to Impress."

Behind the new name I started to fall in love with puns on social media. For example: anneaconda (Anne), megsinablanket (Megan), and wishlizst (last name Lizst), to name a few. And in school whenever clubs, my IBac thing, and others do events they would put in "dress to impress" in order for us students to look professional, or for my case dress like your "Sunday Best." On those I take these days very seriously. I thought of a good pun for my name "Desi" and the "dress to impress" came up in my head that time. After so much thought on other good blog titles, this was the winner.

Overall, "Des to Impress" means that you don't just dress up, as my peers thought of me, for others, but to make yourself live your life to the fullest. And also do the things that you love in your best clothes.

Okay, I have some posts to brainstorm first. Until them toodles!

*this could be the start of something new...* (finish the song in the comments)

Friday Football Style

Monday, August 25, 2014

It's that time again for some football season! While it's still summer, I am getting use out of my shorts before the temperature get cold. Here's to dressing for a football game during the last weeks of summer.

These are Old Navy shorts and the bunch of my favorite shorts are from there as well as my striped shirt. I'm really colorblind because the stripes are red in real life, then my eyes think that it's orange. I forgot to take a picture of my neck candy, but it's my croakies, aviators, and my current favorite ones from Cato.

Some great comfort shoes/sandals are great for me. Some think it's canvas shoes, or even a loud pair of ballet flats. For me it's a great pair of Jack Rogers-esque sandals at Shoe Show. These have expanded over the summer.

A great stack is a current must for me for gameday! My stack included: tassel bracelet, mosquito coil bracelet, usual watch, and a wristlet! A wristlet or small bag is great because it's small, portable when you're walking a lot, and holds some things. The good ones are from 31(mine is pictured) and defintely Lilly (that one has a lipstick holder).

There's a possible chance that I will do these Friday Football blog posts bacause what? I do kind of dress well for Friday games. As the weather progress, we'll see how much more covered I'll be. Until then, what are your Friday Football essentials?

Xoxo, Desi

School Supplies Essentials

Friday, August 1, 2014

It's that time for back to school season again! And I can't wait to get prepared for school with these supplies. This year, I will be a sophmore and I am so excited. These are the things that I will be carrying to school this year!

Bookbag: If you have visited my channel lately, I will be carrying my Jansport Superbreak backpack this year. This is really adorable because it has the pink flamingos, which I love!

Lunchbox: I am thinking of getting a Thirty-One lunch tote with the swimsuits (really, Desi?) or this beautiful pink and green striped one here from HannaAndersson.com (about the same price of the 31 lunchbox). I usually take my lunch like every single day and I want something that will take up some room with a great price tag.

Pencil Pouch: This year I am definitely using a pencil pouch with compartments. I used the smaller pouch that comes with the bigger makeup bag from 31, there were post-its all over the place and the paper would get messed up. You know what? I'm getting one with compartments so no paper would get gessed up again. I have a pink pouch that I could use this year, but I included this polka dot number from Forever 21 that has compartments so nothing would get messed up.

Water Bottle: At the store, my mom and I would get the 24 pack water bottles. Well, what if #oomc (one of my classmates) brought the same brand? For me, drinking from one's water bottle would be whack! I am getting a unique water bottle that will tell 'em, "that's mine!" 1. 2. 3.

Colored Writing Toys: If you are drawn to colorful things, these will save your life in getting good grades. Highlighters, colored pens, and markers help make a difference. I am planning on getting a 10-pack highlighters from Yoobi, a collection at Target that sends school supplies when you buy their products. Also I am debating on getting the 16-pack flair pens or if Up & Up brand at Target have their 24-pack pens, I might get those instead this year if they sold them this year.

Notebooks and Paper: I've gotten 4 beautiful notebooks at Wal-Mart and some loose leaf paper in college ruled because I've gotten so many wide ruled, I get so sick of writing on them. See my recent video here.

Pencils and Black Pens: This year I am using the BIC mechanical pencil that comes in 24 pack (courtesy of my mom's job) and the Pilot G2 pens. Out of all of the pens I've had in my life, the Pilor G2's are A++ for me. They write oh so well and if you're looking for a good pen, check them out at Walmart, Target, or any office stores.

Folder/File Folder: I'm debating if I want to use a folder or a file folder, which is good for storing forms, permission slips, flyers, and more!

Calculator: I am using my TI-36X Pro until I can save up to get a TI-84 (hope I get a pink one!) Once you know how to work the calculator, this can save your life in any math class.

Post-its: For reminders, bookmarks, to-do lists, agenda work, I am definitely using my post-its this year. I'm using the ones from last year because I have plenty left and they do last for a long time.

Agenda: I am a proud owner of a Lilly Pulitzer Medium Agenda in Tusk in Sun (the remix) and this is what I'm drawn to for planning things during the school year because I'm a busy girl. Big exams are coming, so I'll keep these in handy.

Binders and Their Dividers: This year I am doing a binder for every two classes (if I could explain more, check out the link on the notebooks and paper above). For every class, I'm including 4 dividers to organize my work.

Dressing Up My Rucksack: To dress up my Jansport, I am planning to get it monogrammed at a local monogramming store (monograms are really the baes!). If it doesn't work I am dressing up with a bow, monogrammed keychain, ribbons, and key fobs (so I know it's mine).

It seems that I hit every spot.
